The History of Music Videos

Hello again!

Attatched below you will find my research on music videos, going from 1911 to the 2000's! 

The first thing I looked at was the film 'Alexander Nevsky', which was one of the first occurrences where music was played over visuals. This was the first step towards the creation of music videos as it was the first time that a visual had been played along side a piece of music which were linked.
I then looked at 'soundies'. These were visual duke boxes which played short music videos for the public's entertainment. This was the second major step toward music videos because it was the first time someone had put visuals to their music and aired it to the public. The visuals, however, were very simple and only showed the group/artist stood singing (or miming) along to the lyrics of the song)
This was closely followed by Tony Bennet who was filmed walking along a street while his music played. This was then aired to UK and US TV stations. This was the next major step as it showed that artists were thinking about what other visuals could be used and also encouraged other artists to try this.
The next major step was musical films, for example Singing In The Rain. This is because the visuals told a story while the music was playing as it was inside a story. 
The Beatles are the band who really sent music videos sky rocketing with their music video to 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. This was the first purpose-made music video which was used to illustrate the song in an artful manner. The Beatles also started to show off themselves as individuals through their videos.
This band and their work encouraged other artists to take the next step forward and use their music videos to portray political arguments and fight for things that they felt strongly about. 
Music videos were then being shown on TV, aired to thousands and the idea was really born.
